The role of air abrasion in preventing and treating early pit and fissure caries.

چکیده
Traditional non-destructive methods of diagnosing pit and fissure caries, such as explorers and radiographs, have limited use in the detection of both early lesions and lesions extending well into dentin.1-3 Furthermore, bacteriological sampling of early dentin lesions provides little reason to believe that we can effectively “seal in” decay when present.4,5 With the emergence of pit and fissure decay as the most prevalent form of new decay in our population, accurate diagnosis and early prevention are becoming increasingly important. This article presents the clinician with a treatment technique for this hidden decay, which is estimated to affect 15% of first and second molars in 6to 18-year-olds.6

Pit and Fissure Sealant Versus Fluoride Varnish In Prevention of Occlusal Caries
Introduction: It was to compare the efficacy of semiannually fluoride varnish application versus pit and fissure sealant to reduce occlusal caries incidence. Materials and methods: A randomized parallel designed study was conducted with 352 child-ren aged 6-7 years. Participants were allocated into biannual application of varnish (n=179) (NaF 5 %( Durafluor, DENTSPLY®, Latin America) or re...
متن کاملEffect of etching on leakage of sealants placed after air abrasion.
PURPOSE The aim of the present study was to assess the microleakage of pit and fissure sealants in: 1) air-abraded molars with and without etching and 2) in preventive resin restorations (PRR) prepared with air abrasion or mechanically with a bur. METHODS Forty molars with no or minimal occlusal caries were cleaned with pumice, washed, and assigned to four groups of 10 teeth each. In group A,...

PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate microleakage of pit and fissure sealants after using three different pit and fissure preparation techniques: (1) traditional pumice prophylaxis and acid etching, (2) fissure enameloplasty and acid etching and (3) air abrasion and acid etching. METHODS Sixty extracted third molars with no clinical evidence of caries were randomly divid...

متن کاملComparison of six different methods of cleaning and preparing occlusal fissure surface before placement of pit and fissure sealant: an in vitro study.
AIM & OBJECTIVES The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate and compare the microleakage of pit and fissure sealants after using six different preparation techniques: (a) brush, (b) pumice slurry application, (c) bur, (d) air polishing, (e) air abrasion, and (f) longer etching time. MATERIAL & METHOD The study was conducted on 60 caries-free first premolars extracted for orthodontic p...
